Assistant Artistic Director
Sergei Vanaev was born on April 15th, 1967 in Russia. At the age of 10 he was accepted into one of the most renowned school of ballet, The Ballet Academy of the Bolshoi Theater. After 8 years of comprehensive studies in the Arts, he graduated with honors in 1985. Sergei Vanaev is recognized internationally as an accomplished dancer, teacher and Artistic Director. He assumed the position of Assistant Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer of Mystic Ballet in 2007. After spending 16 years as principal dancer, with The Moscow Classical Ballet, Deutsche Opera Rhein in Dusseldorf, Oper Der Sadt Bonn, and Theater Der Stadt Dortmund, Vanaev was also assistant of the ballet director of the Theater Dortmund. In 2004 Mr. Vanaev accepted the position of Artistic Director of Stadttheater Bremerhaven Ballet . As Artistic Director, Vanaev has defined the Company’s image with his own classical and neo-classical works, ranging from full-length ballets to contemporary works and world premieres. As a guest choreographer his works are performed throughout Europe, North America, and Japan.
As the company’s resident choreographer, Vanaev has created numerous world premieres for Mystic Ballet as well as staging various works from his repertory for the Company, to be performed in the US and abroad.
Mr.Vanaev was recently honored by the Legendary Russian Prima Ballerina, Maya Plisetskaya, when she presented him with the Maya Plisetskaya Prize for Best Choreography of the Year 2006, stating, “What you’ve done, Sergei, has its own soul and unparalleled quality.”
